Susanna Kahnke, M.S., NCC, Intern

About Me

I am a Minnesota native with a passion for helping others, and I am excited to be working in the Mankato area. I chose this career because I have seen the difference that counseling an make in someone’s life. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, watching Netflix and, of course, spending time with my family, friends and my cat.

Education and Work Experience

I recently completed my Master of Science (M.S.) degree in clinical mental health counseling at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and am working toward licensure as an LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor). My degree has prepared me for work in a variety of counseling settings, with a variety of clients and presenting problems. I also hold a Bachelor of Science degree from MNSU in psychology, with a minor in Spanish.

During graduate school, I completed a year-long practicum and internship at the MNSU Counseling Center, where I provided both individual and group counseling to young adults with a large variety of presenting concerns and diagnoses. Prior to completing my M.S., I worked with adults with intellectual disabilities for over three years.

My Approach to Counseling

My goal is to provide a nonjudgmental and safe space where my clients can voice their concerns, whatever they may be. I believe in a collaborative approach to counseling and aim to make my clients feel heard and understood. It is my privilege to serve as an advocate for my clients and to be a part of their life stories. In my work, I see clients as more than just diagnoses but as people in context. I prioritize providing culturally sensitive services and love working with a diverse body of clients. I feel that, as a counselor, it is my job to be a voice of compassion in an often oppressive society.

I enjoy working with a large variety of ages, presenting concerns and diagnoses. I especially love working with clients of traditionally oppressed populations, such as LBGTQAI+ individuals, women, ethnic and cultural minorities and others. Of special interest to me are issues of sexual orientation, gender identity, women’s issues, gender dynamics, relationship distress, family dynamics, relationship trauma and sexual assault.
