Penelope Rivers, MSW, LICSW

Penelope RiversAbout Me

I am married and have three adult children all living in the Twin Cities area. I developed an interest in counseling after working as a middle school science teacher in New York, where I am from. The teaching profession lit a fire within, which eventually led to the realization that a more focused approach to helping others would be a better fit for my interests and temperament. I made the decision to enter the social work profession in my late 30s and have never looked back. I now have 22+ years of experience in the mental health field and find it to be more exciting and rewarding than ever.  In February of 2013 we moved back to New Ulm to be near my children and their families.

Education:

I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire. I have an MA in secondary education and a Masters in Social Work degree.  I received my MSW degree from the State University of New York, Stony Brook in 1991 and have been a licensed clinical social worker since 1993.  I have attended several professional trainings and am always interested in learning new skills and modalities.

Work Experience

I have expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, clinical hypnosis for amelioration of anxiety and depression. I also offer solution-focused/brief treatment when appropriate. I am experienced working with people who have experienced trauma and I offer trauma-informed therapy.  Before settling in New Ulm, I practiced as a therapist in Illinois, Wisconsin and Oregon.

Therapeutic Philosophy

I am a firm believer in the benefits of mindfulness and use of mindfulness skills.  I enjoy helping others uncover their potential and grow into a state of emotional well-being. I see myself as a guide, someone with a good sense of humor and lots of life experience who is also supportive and compassionate about the difficulties inherent in the change process.

Penelope Rivers, MSW, LICSW, is located in our New Ulm office and provides services for ages 15 and up.
